Background:

The goal of this project was to create a paper-based, 3D interactive game representing the typographic movement known as Swiss Punk or the New Wave Movement. This movement emerged in the 1970s as a rebellion against the strict, grid-based Swiss Style.

Approach

The purpose of this movement was to express emotions through type by experimenting with a variety of typefaces, weights, and kerning settings. My approach was to take a highly structured object and transform it into a dynamic shape that challenged its original form. To achieve this, I used a mirror cube and reimagined it as a more disorganized, creative, and unconventional structure. The game starts as a cube with fragmented images, but as the user completes the images on the cube's faces, it morphs into an irregular form. This transformation redefines the traditional cube shape, much like the New Wave movement redefined the traditional grid system. In honor of Wolfgang Weingart’s role as the father of this movement, I named my game the Wolfgang Cube.

Outcome

Dan Friedman’s photography worked perfectly because it consists of six parts that wrap seamlessly around a cube. A few touches of color around the cube make the entire structure look modern and dynamic. The mixture of typefaces and weights in the photograph creates a unique emotional tableau on each surface of the cube, playfully illustrating the essence of the New Wave movement. The design and colors keep the cube cohesive, even with its irregular shapes and fragmented images.
